Kieler Woche 2010 - Drao (ITA) gewinnt vor tiGER (GER) und Kent38 (FRA)

Mit Spannung wurden die letzten Wettfahrten der 2. Virtuellen Kieler Woche 2010 erwartet. Konnte Miniden (DEN) seinen Vorsprung im Zwischenklassement bis zur letzten Zieldurchfahrt retten? Was durfte man von den Verfolgern Drao (ITA), Kent38 (FRA) und Peppino (SUI) erwarten? Schaffte es doch noch ein deutscher Skipper aufs Podium? Die besten Chancen hierfür hatte DennisConner (GER), der nur einen knappen Rückstand auf die Podiumränge hätte aufholen müssen. Doch auch die Chancen von tiGER (GER) waren intakt. Und der etwas zurück liegende Nuuk (GER) war sehr zuversichtlich: Im Gespräch mit dem VSKFun Reporter gab er Preis, dass er sich einen "5-Punkte-Plan" aufgestellt hatte. Sofern er - so hat es der Mathematik-Student ausgerechnet - in den verbleibenden drei Wettfahrten nicht mehr als 5 Punkte sammeln würde, stünde er auf dem Podium. Ein "3-Punkte-Plan", den ihm den Sieg der Kieler Woche hätte einbringen können, sei ihm dann aber "zu riskant" gewesen. Ober technisch ausgedrückt: Während der "5-Punkte-Plan" keine Variablen, sondern nur Konstanten aufweise, sei der "3-Punkte-Plan" mit zahlreichen Variablen versehen. Ob seine Einschätzung stimmte, ob Variablen und Konstanten, Chancen und Risiken, richtig eingeschätzt wurden, mussten die Rennen entscheiden.

Im Gegensatz zum ersten Finaltag, wehte der Wind gestern etwas kräftiger, und dies im wortwörtlichen als auch übertragenen Sinne. Zu den Geschehnissen auf dem Wasser:

4. Wettfahrt (Rio F5)

Die erste Wettfahrt des Schlusstages war von drehenden Winden geprägt. Mladen (CRO), der sich gegenüber dem ersten Finaltag deutlich steigern konnte, übernahm nach dem Start die Führung, während der Führende Miniden zu spät an den Start kam und deshalb einen DNC hinnehmen musste. Bis zur ersten Luvmarke konnten Nuuk, tiGER und Eule (GER) zum Kroaten aufschliessen. Auf dem anschliessenden Vorwindkurs konnte die Spitzengruppe die Verfolger dank einer Böe distanzieren. Vor allem Mladen und tiGER profitierten davon und lagen am Leegate 20 Sekunden vor dem Drittplatzierten Nuuk. Auf der zweiten Kreuz nutzte Mladen die Dreher optimal. Bis ins Ziel konnte er aber dennoch nur einen knappen Vorsprung von 20 Hundertstel auf tiGER retten. Die im Zwischenklassement auf Rang 2 und 3 liegenden Kent38 und Peppino wurden Neunter bzw. Achter. Dagegen schien Droa einen Sprung nach vorne machen zu können. Dieses Vorhaben wurde aber nach einer Kollision mit einer nicht zu rundenden Bahnmarke jäh gestoppt. Umso erfolgreicher musste der Italiener sein, wenn er seine gute Ausgangslage nicht verspielen wollte.

5. Wettfahrt (Naples F6)

Drao wollte seinen Flüchtigkeitsfehler im nächsten Rennen sofort wieder gutmachen, was ihm sehr gut gelang. Er setzte sich nach dem Start zur 5. Wettfahrt umgehend an die Spitze und landete einen Start-Ziel-Sieg. Bei der ersten Luvtonnenrundung führte er vor Mladen, tiGER und voventi (RUS). Dahinter folgte Miniden. Dessen Bojenmanöver wurde allerdings protestiert worauf Miniden ein DSQ erhielt. Auf dem Downwind gab es nur wenige Halsenmanöver, zu einseitig wehte der Wind in dieser Phase des Rennens. Einziger Profiteur war Kent38, der sich auf Rang 2 hinter Drao schieben konnte. Der Italiener fuhr aber einem ungefährdeten Sieg entgegen. Am Ziel hatte er sogar 20 Sekunden Vorsprung auf Kent38 und tiGER.

6. Wettfahrt (Cowes F4)

Das Zwischenklassement präsentierte sich vor der letzten Wettfahrt folgendermassen: Kent38 führte mit 14 Punkten, vor Miniden und Drao mit je 18 Punkte und vor tiGER mit 21 Punkten. Peppino mit bereits 30 Zählern war aus dem Rennen um den Sieg bereits ausgeschieden. Die abschliessende Wettfahrt galt zwar nicht als Medal Race. Doch verbieten es die Segelanweisungen, das letzte Rennen zu streichen, weshalb ihr trotz bloss einfacher Zählweise ein besonderer Stellenwert beizumessen war.

Die am pin end startenden Skipper - unter anderem das vordere Drittel des Zwischenklassementes mit Nuuk, Miniden, tiGER, Peppino und Kent38 - schienen nach dem Start die Nase vorne zu haben. Doch zum einen verpassten sie es, rechtzeitig auf der Anliegelinie zu wenden. Zum anderen wurden sie von einem Rechtsdreher überrascht. So kam es, dass Drao am Luvfass erneut die Führung übernehmen konnte, gefolgt von voventi. Diese beiden konnten sich vom Feld entscheidend distanzieren, was dem Italiener den frühzeitigen Sieg der Kieler Woche 2010 einbrachte. Miniden und tiGER konnten im weit in die Länge gezogene Feld noch Plätze gutmachen und kämpften um den zweiten Schlussrang, während Kent38 und Peppino mitten im Feld keine Chancen mehr hatten, auf den Ausgang an der Spitze Einfluss zu nehmen.

Mit zwei Siegen am Schlusstag sicherte sich der Italiener Drao den Gewinn der 2. Virtuellen Kieler Woche. VSKFun gratuliert für die grandiose Leistung! VSKitalia feiert ihren Sieger in ihrem Forum. Auch wenn einige der Mitfavoriten wie Spittillo (ITA), Lumba (SLO) - beide aus Zeitmangel - sowie Trapanese (ITA) - dessen Rechner anlässlich seines Wohnungswechsels in die Brüche ging - nicht dabei waren, konnte sich Drao in einem hochkarätigen Feld durchsetzen. Mit tiGER hat ein Deutscher mit Rang 2 das Podium erreicht. Kent38 sicherte sich Rang 3, während Nuuk seinen "5-Punkte-Plan" nicht umsetzen und auch DennisConner, fabian4034 sowie Eule - als weitere deutsche Skipper - am Schlusstag nicht reüssieren konnten. Diese Skipper belegen geschlossen die Plätze 8 bis 11. Peppino verpasste als Vierter das Podium, nachdem er vergangenes Jahr bereits den undankbaren 4. Platz belegte.

Kieler Woche 2010 - Drao (ITA) wins ahead of tiGER (GER) and Kent38 (FRA)

Everybody was keen on the last races of the 2nd virtual Kieler Woche 2010. Could Miniden save the lead in the intermediate ranking until the last finish? What can be expected by the skippers behind Drao (ITA), Kent38 (FRA) and Peppino (SUI)? Will it be possible for a german skipper to get a podium place? Best chances have been given to DennisConner (GER) with only few points behind the podium ranked skippers. But tiGER (GER), as well, had good chances to climb up to the podium. With Nuuk (GER), the third german skipper, some places behind was optimistic: During a team speak session with a VSKFun reporter he showed up with a "5-points-schedule". As long as he - that's what the mathmatic student calculated - will not get more than 5 points during the last 3 races, he will get a podium place.  A "3-points-schedule" would have been an alternative to make it to the win of the virtual Kieler Woche, but it was far to risky - he described. In a more technical description: While the "5-points-schedule" has no variables, but constants included, the "3-points-schedule" would ahave included numerous variables. If his assumptions, variables or constants, chances or risks, were right had to be shown by the race results. 

In difference from the 1st day of the finals, the wind blowed stronger on Thursday. And this can be understood in the verbatim and figurative sense. Let's have a look on the water:

4th Race (Rio F5)

The 1st race of the last Kieler Woche day was appointed with shifting winds. Mladen (CRO), who change for the better in regard to the 1st final day, took the lead at the start, while Miniden, the overall leader was too late at the course and received a DNC. Until the 1st windward mark Nuuk, tiGER and Eule (GER) closed the gap to Mladen. On the following downwind leg the leading group took a puff and could establish a comfortable lead in front of the rest of the fleet. Especially Mladen and tiGER could a establis a 20sec lead on 3rd placed Nuuk at the leeward gate. On the 2nd windward beat Mladen sailed the wind shifts optimal, but tiGER could follow. Mladen finally won this race with only 20 hundreds of a second in front of tiGER. The 2nd and 3rd ranked skippers in the intermediate ranking, Kent38 (FRA) and Peppino (SUI) finished this race on 8th and 9th position, while Drao seems to get a good result, but finally crashed into a buoy and was stopped immediately. To keep his title chances alive, he would had to convince with some good results not to loose his good ranking position after 3 races. 

5th Race (Naples F6)

Drao wanted to erase his oversight immediately and in race No. 5 it worked out. After the start he could manage a winning start. At the 1st windward mark he took the lead on Mladen, tiGER and voventi (RUS) - followed by Miniden.  But Minidens manoeuvre at the mark was protested and Miniden received a DSQ acc. the Protest Committee decision. On the downwind leg only few gybe manoeuvres have been observed, because of a one-sided windshift during the 1st downwind. Only Kent38 could take an advantage by this shift and established rank 2 behind Drao. But the italian had an invulnerable finish. At the line he had a 20sec lead on Kent38 and tiGER.

6th race (Cowes F4)

Before race the last race of the final the inermediate ranking showed Kent38 in a leading position with 14 points, Miniden and Drao with 18 points close behind and tiGER with 21 points still in touch. Peppino with 30 points after 5 races had already lost his chances for the title. Even though the final race wasn't a medal race (with double points), the sailing instructions defined, that the score of this last race can't be discarded. In spite of single scoring, the focus should be on a good result for an upcoming champion. 

The skippers, starting at the pin end with the upper 1/3 of the ranking Nuuk, Miniden, tiGER, Peppino and Kent38 being part of them, seemed to have an advantage right after the start. But they missed to tack on the layline in time and suffered by a right shift. Hence Drao took another lead at the 1st upwind mark followed by Voventi. These 2 skippers could establish a comfortable lead and the italian could save the 1st rank overall and the title of the Virtual Kieler Woche 2010. Miniden and tiGER improved their positions during the last race and fought for the 2nd place, while Kent38 and Peppino had no chance with a midfield rank to influence the top ranks.

With 2 wins on the final day the italian Drao  won the 2nd Virtual Kieler Woche. VSKFun congratulates for this impressive win! VSKItalia is celebrating their champion in the VSKItalia-Forum. Although some favorites like Spittillo (ITA), Lumba (SLO) - both due to a lag of time - as well as Trapanese (ITA), who lost his chances due to a PC crash during his move to a new appartment, have not taking part in the finals, Drao made his way in a top-class event. tiGER, a german skipper, achieved the 2nd podium rank. Kent38 saved the 3rd rank overall, while Nuuk missed his "5-points-schedule" and DennisConner, fabian4034 and Eule - other german skippers - missed a better ranking during day 2 of the finals. These skippers achieved ranks 8 to 11. Peppino missed the podium in unlucky 4th position, already twice after his last year result during Kieler Woche Finals.
